and when you upgrade you get the matrix screen which says press start, you press start updates and then says press any key to continue

yes. I do that and then it says that the upgrade was successful. Then I hit the reset button, but still no infinity logo on startup.

couple of things left then mate. One is that there is a new firmware V1.45 available on the matrix site, so wouldn't hurt to try the new firmware. The other is that there must be a problem on the install. Recheck all the solder points, that they are all in the correct positions and that there are no bridges and solder isn't spotty or flaky. The final thing would be that there was a fault with the chip, doesn't happen often, but it isn't unheard of, in which case you'd need to send back to your supplier.
