Default DMA problems

sponsored links

I have had a good look over the Bios settings and they are as follows:

Primary Master - which is my 'c' drive
Set in PIO Mode 4 and Ultra DMA Mode5

Primary Slave - which is my 'd' drive - 2nd hard drive
Set in PIO mode 4 and Ultra DMA Mode 5

Secondary Master - which is my cdrom drive
Set as PIO Mode 4 and Ultra DMA Mode 2

Secondary Slave - which is my DVD player
Set as PIO Mode 4 and Ultra DMA Mode 2

I have discovered that I can set all of the IDE setting to DMA except the secondary ide device 0 setting which need to be on PIO for the additional burning programs to work.

Primary IDE Channel settings are as follows

Device 0
Tranfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA mode 5

Device 1
Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA Mode 5

Secondary IDE Channel settings

Device 0
Tranfer Mode - PIO only
Current Transfer Mode - PIO Mode

Device 1
Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA Mode 5

Does this help anyone solve my problem ?

Colin

I don't know if you read my post as the timing was quite close.

Can you not set the Bios settings to auto for the pio/udma?

I would try the driver updates as I suggested, and look at the secondary master driver settings as well.

Colin

There is a firmware update for your Cd-ROM which adds support for XP. If your existing firmware is 2.0E or earlier then this could well be the problem. Here's the link for it. ***********.teac.co.jp/dspd/download/firmware/cd-w512eb/explain.html.

Default CDROM issues

Hi Tim, thanks for all that.

Unfortunately I am away on business again and will try those ideas out on Monday.

My CDROM does already have the latest frimware - 2.0k already which was updated about 2 to 3 months ago.

I will give the other ideas a go next week and let everyone know how I get on. Thanks again everyone, for all your help with this matter, sorry to drag this out.

Talking Problem Finally Solved !

Hi everyone, thanks again for all your help with this matter.

Sorry for the delay in back to everyone on this subject.

Tim I tried to update, re-install all the drivers for the IDE/ATA Controller and that didn't work so I decided to by another CD reader/writer and replace the TEAC CD-W512EB (12x10x32) as it is 5 years old now and replace it with a Benq 5232W which is a 2005 model (52x32x52) it only cost me 12:50 from ebuyer which was a good price I thought.

I have installed the new hardware, Windows has recognised it, changed the driver automatically and now I can burn on the DMA setting on both the Primary and Secondary IDE/ATA settings.

I can only assume that the TEAC reader/writer didn't like burning in DMA mode which is strange as I was under the impression that the TEAC was DMA compatible.

Anyway the problems now resolved, thanks everyone for all your help with this matter.

At some point in the future I will do a clean install of Windows XP, as recommended by everyone.
