Default Wireless Clueless

sponsored links
I know absolutely nothing about wireless technology.

I am using 1MB Telewest Broadband.

A few answers required please folks......

I wish to network my desktop pc and laptop. My laptop is wireless enabled already.

1. Do I just need to buy a router?, if so which type is the best for Telewest Broadband.

2. Do I need to make my desktop wireless as well or can I just plug in a cable from the router to my desktop?

3. If I buy a 54Mbps Wireless-G Router will I still get the maximum speed from my connection? (Obviously it would be halfed by 2 PCs though!)

Please help folks, I want this up and running as soon as possible as my kids are doing my head in when I use the internet.

The brand of router shouldn't matter, you'd probably be safe buying the cheapest one you can find.

I'm not sure if you can buy a router that has both wired and wireless connections, wouldn't hurt to look.

The speed you get depends on your setup. There are many things that can interfere with a wireless signal, cordless phones, wiring in the wall, microwave, etc., so it's hard to say what speed you will get. Also, your speed won't necessarily be cut in half just because you've got 2 computers sharing a connection, if both are online at the same time, and both are downloading large files, then you'll probably see your speed affected, otherwise, probably not.
