well ive tried to do that. (which i thought sounded easy)

i have formatted the hard drive (it is in 2 partitions)

i put it in the laptop and it says "NTLDR is missing" straight away, and doesn't go any further.

what next?

If I put the hard drive in the pc along with win98 cd, it says:
Type the name of the command interpreter (E.g. c:\windows\command.com) and wont go any further.

(I tried it with the win98 cd because i have a copied version of winxp and no longer have the original and doesnt always work properly / doesnt seem to work as a boot up)

you may struggle with the drivers for your laptop on a win98 load, Xp would prolly contain all the drivers you needed for the laptop

"Type the name of the command interpreter (E.g. c:\windows\command.com) and wont go any further."

To get it to work under w98, you have to put the system files on it....

Use: format C:/s

that special /s puts the system files on it (command.com, etc) then you can use the hd as itll boot.
