Default CD driver stoped working out of the blue: Code 41??

sponsored links

Heya! I have a laptop and it has DVD and CD Rom drive which is Mashita DVD-RAM UJ-830S and out of the blue it has stopped working, and stopped reading any type of CD. When I open device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark by the Mashita. It said when I clicked properties

A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This error occurs when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device (Code 41).

So, I uninstalled it and scanned for new hardware, and the computer reinstalled it, but the same problem came up.

My system is:

I have downloaded a CDRW update off the Microsoft update website, but canít really download any other updates because I am on a dial up 44k modem and am on pa yas you go,so I can only download updates I need directly related to this problem rather than all security updates which someone suggested I tried. I was wondering if anyone could help Ė it started out of the blue Ė the only difference is I have been using the laptop to burn lots of CDs in the past 2 weeks, but I havenít been on the internet at all so I donít think itís a virus, and I donít understand how one day it worked, the next it didnít.

I have found this solution when searching in your forums, but I really don't get what I should do - I can folloe step by step instructions, but am a bit of a computer novice!

Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

Restart your computer.

I don't get the upper filters stuff... sorry am stupid!

Thanks .
