If it's a Compaq, do you know the model number?

There is usually a sticker or writing somewhere.

Then go to the HP/Compaq site and see if they supply motherboard and chipset drivers for XP or any info.

If you are unsure, post the exact model number.

it's a 7998. I also have a external hard drive that work fine with that computer but if it try moving it to my other puter, it detected the new storage device and it tells me it's ready to use but i can't see the drive under My Computer. Again I can't give you enough thanx. I really appreciate you taking the time to help.

Is it a Presario 7998?

If it is, they don't do drivers for XP, meaning the drivers are either on the Windows XP CD or the recovery CD.

THESE are the only drivers they do.

As far as your other problem with the external hard drive, I really don't know as you haven't supplied enough information.

However, you need to sort out Device Manager, and also run the Info Tool and see what that says.

How do you know if it's not a legit copy or not?

Just because you are using a pirated copy, doesn't mean others are.

If it comes to my knowledge that someone is using a stolen copy, then as far as I'm concerned, they can help themselves.
