Default Everything restored to default settings randomly with missing files?

Ok so I'm running Mac OSX on my macbook, and I am typically computer-inclined (although I am relatively new to the Mac operating system) but I'm completely stumped on this one. If anyone could help me out I would be GREATLY appreciative. The problems I'm facing right now are that I turned on my computer to find everything back to the original default settings of my computer: the background is no longer the same, all of the littie personalized configurations are no longer in operation, etc. This in itself wouldn't be a big deal but some more troubling observations are that my library in iTunes is completely blank, and when I go into the hard drive to locate files some of them are missing. In particular all of my music files. The applications are all still there and so are my documents, etc. but my 60+ gigs of music are missing. The strange thing with that also is that the hard drive still claims to have the same amount of space left on it as it used to, 13 gb. This leads me to believe that the files didn't just get deleted right off the computer. Also when I open up Safari, all of my bookmarks are gone. The last observation is that when I open up iChat, instead of logging right online like it normally would, it goes to a 'welcome to ichat' screen... as if I've never opened up this application before and I was logging in for the first time. I'm going to run down everything that happened right before I started having issues in the hope that this might help troubleshooting:

I was simply running Safari, iTunes, and iChat to start things off. When I started packing things up for the night I closed all of them, but iTunes and iChat were both not responding. This is not out of the ordinary at all in my experience but I did notice after right clicking on each of their icons that there wasn't an alert that said 'not responding', which it normally would in this kind of situation. I tried the force quit option a few times to no avail, and I was going to be late for a class I had coming up so I shut the computer down. At first I tried shutting it down the normal way (pressing the power button and then selecting the 'shut down' option), but nothing was happening when I tried this so I held down the power button to shut -er down.

Sorry for the novel but I'm trying to be as comprehensive as possible. Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions? It could very well be an easy fix but I just have no idea how to proceed.

Thanks a lot in advance.
