Default CD-ROM Doesn't read/write

sponsored links

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop...yeah...yeah its ancient but its gets the job done, with a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N drive which has suddenly stopped reading any disks (audio or data). The drive shows up as a drive, it has power, will eject, etc. When I put a cd in the green light flashes for about 10 seconds as if it is trying to read the disk, but nothing else happens. I am running Windows XP. Now it will not read any disk. The drive will not even boot from the drive before windows xp even loads. Is my drive completely trashed?

Can anyone help?
