How to Burn Avatar Blu-ray to Standard DVD on Windows?

Have you ever faced the situation that you have Blu-ray drive for computer and a standard DVD player, but no Blu-ray player? Enjoying Blu-ray movies directly will be impossible with the limited hardware. However, there are various solutions for us to enjoy Blu-ray movies even if we do not have the Blu-ray player. We can convert the Blu-ray movie to MP4, AVI for watching on computer, on portable devices like iPad. We can also convert Blu-ray to the format for burning to DVD, and enjoy on TV with standard DVD player.

This article explains the way to backup Blu-ray movie to DVD disc on Windows computer, taking Avatar as an example. Different tools will be taken according to the operating system. We will use Windows DVD Maker and Aunsoft Blu-ray Ripper on Windows Vista and Windows 7, and IFOEdit, ImgBurn and Aunsoft Blu-ray Ripper on Windows XP.

When burning to DVD, we shall bear in mind that the maximum size for DVD9 is 7.95GB and the maximum size for DVD5 is 4.38GB, and the high definition Blu-ray are generally in 1080p with 25-50GB. Thus, we shall compress Blu-ray movie to lower resolution.

Part I. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users
Window DVD Maker is built-in tool for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Step 1. Load Avatar Blu-ray to Aunsoft Blu-ray Ripper.

Insert Avatar Blu-ray disc to Blu-ray drive. My Sony Blu-ray Rom includes the functions to write DVD. Run Aunsoft Blu-ray Ripper and click BD/DVD Rom to load Avatar movie.

Step 2. Rip Avatar Blu-ray main movie to WMV for Windows DVD Maker.

The first title as the main title and the rest are the extras. Here I only choose the main movie for conversion. Click the Format option and choose Common Video > WMV2 (WMV8)(*.wmv), and then click the Settings button to choose 720x480 as size in pixels, and 29.97 as frame rate. If you are from Europe, you can choose 720x576 as size in pixels and 25 as frame rate.

Note: Windows DVD Maker supports importing AVI, WMV, MPG, and here I use WMV as an example.
After changing the settings, click the convert button and the conversion starts.

Step 3. Load WMV to Window DVD Maker.
Run Window DVD Maker by choosing Start > All Programs > Window DVD Maker. Then click Add items button to load the output WMV video.

Step 4. Specify disc title and choose DVD menu.
Soon after loading WMV file to Windows DVD Maker, you can find Disc title on the bottom of the window. It is marked as date by default. You can change it to any title you like.
Click the Next button and you will face the window to choose menu style. Choose one from the template.

Step 5. Start burning DVD.
Eject the Avatar Blu-ray disc from Blu-ray Rom, and insert a blank DVD disc for burning. Then, click the Burn button on the bottom and you will face the window indicating the creating DVD process.

Part II. For Windows XP users
As there is no Windows DVD Maker on Windows XP, we shall take other free tools to burn to DVD.

Step 1. Import Avatar Blu-ray to Aunsoft Blu-ray Ripper.

This step is the same as that for Windows Vista and Windows 7. Just click BD/DVD Rom button to load the Avatar movie from the Blu-ray Rom.

Step 2. Rip Avatar Blu-ray to DVD VOB.

The program provides VOB output format for easy burning to DVD with third party software. Choose VCD/DVD/SVCD > DVD NTSC (4:3) to get VOB video as output. And then click the bottom right convert button.

Step 3. Use IFOEdit to create DVD-Video file structure.

Download the free tool IFOEdit (***********.free-codecs.com/download/IFOEdit.htm) and run the program. Click the Create IFOs button, and then you can choose the VOB file and set the output folder for the DVD IFO and BUP files. Here I choose the output folder to the same folder as the VOB file. Click OK and the program starts creating DVD-Video files structure.

Step 4. Burn DVD-Video files to DVD disc.
Eject the Avatar Blu-ray disc from the Blu-ray Rom and insert a blank DVD disc. Run ImgBurn (********download.imgburn.com/SetupImgBurn_2.5.1.0.exe) , and choose the top-right option Write files/folders to disc. Then Load the folder with DVD-Video files structure, which includes the VOB, IFO and BUP files. Click the burn button to start burning.

The above mentioned two methods for burning Blu-ray disc to DVD for Avatar are just examples. You can use your own Blu-ray movies and get the backup easily. Hope you enjoy your Blu-ray movies with any form you want.
