There are quite a number of manufacturers and a huge number of re-branders/re-sellers. The same company can sell the same disc in different countries under different names, or the same name in multiple countries but source the discs from different manufacturers or manufacturing plants.
There was an interesting discussion on the forum last year about how Brand 'X' was great as long as it came from the Phillipines factory but was no good if it came from the Mexico factory.
Then throw the burner into the equation, some burners are very accepting & will take anything that is thrown in them (ie my Plextor

), so I could rate the 'no-name el-cheapo' discs as great but someone with a fussier burner may get a 50% failure rate from them.
Then there is the disc reader, again some CDROMs are fussy & if we get into Audio CD Players or DVD players there's a whole other list of 'my player does/doesn't like brand ...'
