is there somthing taht you do to your cd burner that makes it only able to read 650megs? because when i put a prime periphreals cd in the drive and click the icon once it only shows 648megs... when in fact the cd says 80min/700mb

I don't know whats going on m8, this seems to be happening more & more of late. I'm not sure if its mis-labeled CDR discs, a prob with some new burners or what, but seems odd that all of a sudden we are getting these...never use to.

I purchased some new Verbatim 32x DataLifePlus 700 MB CD-Rs. They were only recognized by my new Plexy 40x burner as 650 MB CD-Rs in all the burnware I tried. I contacted Verbatim and they told me to download the latest firmware, which I had already done. I then sent them the following info from the [url=http://www.gum.de/it/download/english.htm]CD-R Identifier Utility:

Not true. I have the latest firmware (v1.1). Why would the drive read the
32x CD-Rs differently than the 24X? I suggest you check the batch of CD-Rs
being sold by Best Buy.

Here is the ATIP information supplied by the ATIP Information Utility for
the 24x and and the incorrectly labled 32x CD-Rs:
Verbatim 32x CD-R80 DataLifePlus (80MIN 700MB) #94254
ATIP: 97m 34s 22f
Disc Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 656.40MB (74m 43s 00f / LBA: 336075)

Verbatim 24x CD-R80 DataLifePlus (80MIN 700MB) #94187
ATIP: 97m 34s 22f
Disc Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)
From CDRFreak.com:
Quote:
Every CD-R has important info on the disc itself which is called ATIP (Absolute Time In Pre-groove) or pre-groove for short. Without this data/info the CD-R cannot be used by a writer. The ATIP contains the following info:

The capacity of the CD-R

The manufacturer of the CD-R

The type of the CD-R (eg. Audio only)

Supported writing speeds

Absolute lead-in time

Last possible address where data can be written

etc...
Only a CD-Writer can read the ATIP (because like I said before this ATIP is only needed when writing a CD-R).
