Hi all-I just bought a Sony CRX 140E/ch2 from Egghead, after reading the CloneCd requirements. When it arrived, the burner was a model CRX 0811 ! Sony support said there had been no mistake ! This drive apparently has burnproof, as it shows up checked in Clone, but will not do subchannels, as far as I can tell. I have a request in to Egghead to return it, but no reply yet. Anyone have any more info on this CRX 0811 ? The only reference I can find is at c-net site in Singapore, and was no help ! Thanks-jb1

Any input will be appreciated, while I wait to see if I can return this. Sony customer service said this was one of the best drives, but I can find no info on CRX 0811.

Where exactly did you see CRX 0811?
On a sticker on the burner or on the box?
As the stickers on the burners are always a diff number.

Hi Hoss ! It is on the sticker on the drive, and win 98 also recognizes it as CRX 0811. CloneCd says it will not do DRAW/SAO, but is Burnproof, and all else is compatable. Trying to decide whether to keep it, as it was only $ 98.00 after the rebates, so would like an opinion from someone more experienced than I am. Thanks-jb1

I'm having the same problem, purchased from circuit city,
I'm taking mine back tommorow, look at the specs in the book, the crx0811 only has a 2mb buffer, where the crx140e, the one we were supposed to get has 4mb buffer.
Sticker on the top of my drive say's its a crx0811,
I think we both got ripped off.

I've done a search of the Net, but can find no info on a SONY CRX-0811. But if it only cost $98 and has Burnproof it sounds like a bargain, I'd be hanging on to it !

Well as I can't gt on their support site for CDRW's you got me!
Sony does not to my knowledge make either a Burnproof drive nor one with a 2MB buffer, so this is a new one on me.
When you get anymore info let us know will ya?

I'm with you on this one Hoss....never heard of a Sony with Burnproof. Nevertheless, if it does have Burnproof...I'd hold onto it Besides you would'nt need the 4Meg Buffer you were expecting on your 140E, but who cares about that when you have BurnProof. I have a 4Meg Buffer on my HP9300 (Sony 145) and would trade in the extra 2Meg in the buffer for the burnproof

Try it out...if all is fine...keep it....as long as it has the same write speed as the Sony you intended to buy.

Went back to circuit city tonight to exchange the drive,
The salesperson said, Sony is using these in place of the CRX140E\CH2
I asked and received a brand new one , when I got home It turned out to be another CRX0811,
So I guess I'm gonna keep it,The salesmen said it supports burnproof, also the settings in the Sony CD Extreme software are checked for enable Burn-proof.
It just ticks me off that they are selling these in the CRX140E\CH2 boxes.

Hmmm, well I'm certainly puzzeled then as I don't know of ANY 8432 Burnproof drives, so I have no idea where or who makes this one.
I would be interested to know what firmware version this uses.
Look in Device Manager under properties for the drive and look would you?

Hmmm...strange, I wonder if Sony is now doing some "re-badging" of their own? What you think Hoss? Anybody have another explanation on this one?

Just got an email from Sony Technical Support.
Christy say's that the Two drives are exactly the same, Just a change in model number.
Then why in the manual that comes with the burner is the Crx0811 listed as having a 2mb buffer, and the Crx140e\ch2 listed as having 4mb buffer.
Is there any software program I can download to tell me what I have ?
I tried sony's program on my burner and it say's sorry this program only works with cdrw drives )
This is driving me nut's and I will get to the bottom of it.
Thanks,
Laun

Having a heck of a time posting this-getting server error messsage !

Sorry I couldn't get back sooner-had a system crash ! Anyway, what Gizmo is saying is exactly the same as what I heard from sony, and I guess I am gonna keep it as well. Egghead has never responded with a RMA number(what did I expect ?), and it does seem to be OK,. I am pasting the report from Clonecd below, in case it is helpful. I do wish Sony diagnostic program would at least support this drive, but I get the same answer from the program "only works on CDRW"-WoW-Sony says that is what I have ! Thanks for all help-jb1-report is below-

Info on CDWriter:
Manufacturer: SONY
Product: CD-RW CRX0811

I'm gonna keep mine,
It seem's like a good drive.
I made a Working backup of Clive Barker's Undying.
From what I've read very few burners can do this because it uses safedisk2.

Same identification discreptancy with mine also! For some reason I've been unable to make a copy of Nascar Racing 4 using cloneCD. From what I'm told it should take 50 minutes but mine only takes about half that time and of course doesn't work. I've also found that when I turn off Auto-Insert Notification and leave it off, if a change CD's in the drive, it doesn't update the contents correctly.

Interesting......

I've never heared about Sony and BurnProof...

1: Is it a 8/4/32X drive???
2: Try to test if Burnproof works.....do something like defragging the harddrive while burning result in a buffer-underrun? (use CloneCD or a program that supports burnproof with this drive).
3: CloneCD support and burnproof for that price is nice........

Yes .. 8x4x32/2mb/burnproof. B/proof shows up in Nero, Clonecd. I am testing the burnproof at this time, Here are some interesting links :

According to a post I read on anandtech, Bestbuy has it, not their flyer, which shows higher price, but in store, and fry's also had it at 99.xx. I bought mine through egghead, but I had 2 rebates equalling a total of 50.00 to get it down to 99.00. Good Luck, I am quite happy with mine. jb1

Both my rebates were from Sony-a 20.00 and a 30.00. They are expired now. Yes, the drive does support 80 minute cdr. Clone and Nero recognize it, and the only thing I have not been able to copy so far is the sims-probably due to my inexperience.

I bought a crx0811 from SONY but the software given (Sony CD-Maker 2000 Pro) uses a lot of system resources. Adaptec 4.02 and Nero 5 doesn't recognize the drive. Could anyone help me with a program that will make a CRX0811 write with less system resources.

I received this response from a technical support representative on their website's chat service:

"Yes, the CRX 0811 has newer technology written into the firmware that allows the drive to work as efficiently as a 4mb buffer drive with only 2mb. The information we have is that it does have BurnProof Technology."

I just bought a CRX140E/CH2 at CompUSA for $99, which turned out to be a CRX0811. For BurnProof, that's a steal.

(BTW, I can confirm that it burns 700MB CDs.)

My CRX-0811 came with Hotburn 1.4 and worked very well. There is a free upgrade to 1.6 if you already have the 1.4 version. As of this writing I know that EasyCd Creator will not work with this burner, even the 5 version.

Wow! I can't believe I found this forum because for the last week, I've been trying to figure out what I bought. It's nice to know you're not alone. Anyway, I bought my CRX 140E (AKA CRX 0811) at CompUSA for 99.00, too. I still may return it because I can't get the thing to recognize CD-TEXT or other CD software like CD Burner or MP3 CD Maker (both won't recognize the drive).

I'm also wondering about the sample rates it supports because I've got some MP3's that the 0811 says are formatted incorrectly so it will "skip" the selection from recording. What do you folks think? Has it not recognized some MP3's for you?

What I would like to know, can you use the firmware of the CRX 0811 to upgrade the 140e
(for overburn)

it's not the 0811 thats giving you those error messages about some mp3s, it's the software. i use nero and other than corrupt files, it never rejects them. try nero.

so far my 0811 hasn't refused to do anything i've asked of it with nero. haven't used the sony extreme software that came with it much, so i can't speak for that. but it works fine with nero. i tried winoncd and it wouldn't recognise the drive's burnproof capability. nero does tho.

Same thing just happened to me - bought a Sony CRX140E for $99 (special price, no rebates), and it ended up being a CRX0811.

Called Sony, and they said that the drive was "mislabeled", even though their database shows that the CRX0811 only has a 2MB buffer.

My question is, has anyone made any working backups of games with Safedisc or SecureRom protection, using the CRX0811 (and if so, which programs/settings)?

Big thanks! New User/first post.

Safedisc 1 should not be a problem.

Securom might be a problem, because I think that it doesn't support reading subchannels.(Am I right?). Fixed by using a reader that could read subchannels(Toshiba CD/DVD-ROMs is a good choice).

Safedisc 2 is most likely a broblem. Use a crack, add on driver or a Philips/acer/plextor 8X/20X CD-Writer.

Ooops:

Thanks OC-Freak. I am going to try to make a backup of my store-bought Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete, overnight. Supposed to be a Safedisk I CD, according to a few different sites.

I'll let you all know how it goes with clone CD.

BTW...haven't made a coster yet, with backup Audio CDs (set to fastest record [Pioneer DVD] and burn settings, using Sony's CD Extreme software).

I bought a CRX0811, 3 days ago... still "testing"

It writes well but It seems fragile at reading :
1- The CRX Series CD fails sometimes ! So I use my old CDRom Plextor 4x to read it...
2- I did not succeed to read SystemShock2 CD with clone CD... but maybe I missed something.

What do you think about using it as a reader ?

I, too, have been unable to get the Sony CRX0811 Drive to work with Easy CD Creator 5.0 and the upgrade 5.01. However, I have had no problems with the Adaptec DirectCD software for the CD-RWs. I am using the Prassi CD Plus (www.prassieurope.com), which is the same company that markets Sony Extreme software, and I have had no bad discs and very good burn times. The Roxio web site claims the following compatabilities for the Sony CRX0811 Drive:

Software Supported Versions
DirectCD Win 3.03; 5.0
Easy CD Creator 4.03; 5.0
Jam 2.6.2
Toast 4.1.2; 5.0

So, according to them, it should work - it just hasn't for me yet. By the way, I am using Windows 2000 for what it's worth.
